Conservation and Ecology

Protecting biodiversity, restoring ecosystems, shaping a sustainable future

Conservation and ecology at Ludlow University focuses on understanding the natural world and the actions needed to protect it. You’ll study how ecosystems function, how species interact, and how human activity affects biodiversity and the health of our planet.

Our courses combine fieldwork, research and practical conservation experience, helping you develop the scientific and professional skills needed to tackle environmental challenges locally and globally. You’ll learn from experts in ecology, environmental science and conservation policy, and gain hands-on experience in managing and restoring natural habitats.

Fieldwork and species study

Learn through regular field trips, surveying plants and animals in diverse habitats and collecting ecological data.

Research and scientific investigation

Study ecology, genetics, and environmental science through laboratory work and applied research.

Applied conservation

Gain practical experience through projects that involve habitat management, rewilding, and biodiversity monitoring.

Policy and collaboration

Understand how ecological science informs conservation policy and sustainable land management at local and global levels.

Communication and impact

Develop the skills to communicate science effectively to influence policy, education and community action.

What you’ll learn

You’ll study:

  • biodiversity and species conservation
  • ecology, evolution and behaviour
  • habitat management and restoration
  • environmental change and sustainability
  • conservation policy and ethics
  • research methods and field techniques

Teaching includes lectures, fieldwork, laboratory sessions and workshops. You’ll be assessed through field reports, research projects, presentations, essays and a final dissertation based on your independent research.

Life as a conservation and ecology student

As a conservation and ecology student, you’ll spend a significant part of your studies outdoors — surveying wildlife, studying habitats and gathering environmental data. Fieldwork takes place across the UK’s varied ecosystems, from forests and rivers to coastlines and nature reserves.

You’ll also work in modern laboratories equipped for environmental and biological research. Here, you’ll analyse samples, model ecosystems, and evaluate conservation strategies. Our teaching staff are experienced researchers and practitioners whose work spans ecology, biodiversity conservation, and climate change, ensuring your learning reflects real-world practice.

Opportunities to collaborate with local conservation organisations, wildlife trusts and environmental charities allow you to apply your learning in practical settings and build valuable professional connections.

Career paths

A degree in conservation and ecology from Ludlow prepares you for a range of rewarding careers dedicated to protecting and managing the natural environment. Graduates go on to work as ecologists, conservation officers, wildlife consultants, field researchers, and environmental educators.

Many progress to postgraduate study or specialist training in areas such as ecological restoration, environmental policy, or biodiversity management. With a combination of scientific knowledge, field expertise and a commitment to sustainability, you’ll graduate ready to help preserve the planet’s ecosystems for future generations.
