Environmental Biology

Understanding life to protect the planet

Environmental biology at Ludlow University explores how living organisms interact with their surroundings - from ecosystems and biodiversity to climate change and conservation. You’ll study how life adapts to changing environments, how humans influence natural systems, and how science can help protect and restore the world around us.

Our courses bring together ecology, genetics, microbiology and environmental science to help you understand and address some of the biggest challenges facing our planet. Through fieldwork, laboratory research and data analysis, you’ll develop the scientific knowledge and practical skills needed to create a more sustainable future.

Field-based learning

Gain hands-on experience studying plants, animals and ecosystems in diverse environments across the UK and beyond.

Linking field and lab science

Combine fieldwork with laboratory techniques to understand how environmental changes affect living systems.

Applied environmental research

Collect and analyse data to explore issues such as pollution, habitat loss, and climate adaptation.

Global and local perspectives

Learn how environmental biology informs sustainable policy, conservation management and public awareness.

Collaboration and teamwork

Work in groups to design and implement projects that address real environmental challenges.

What you’ll learn

Environmental biology at Ludlow provides a scientific and applied understanding of how living systems respond to environmental change.
You’ll study:

  • ecology and ecosystem dynamics
  • biodiversity and conservation
  • genetics and adaptation
  • environmental monitoring and management
  • climate change and sustainability science
  • field and laboratory research methods

Teaching combines lectures, field courses, lab sessions, and research projects. Assessment includes reports, data analysis, field notebooks, group projects and independent research in your final year.

Life as an environmental biology student

As an environmental biology student at Ludlow, you’ll spend as much time outdoors as in the lab - exploring habitats, collecting data and learning how to analyse and interpret environmental evidence. Our teaching makes the most of the natural environments around Ludlow and the wider region, from woodlands and rivers to coastal and urban ecosystems.

You’ll also develop practical skills in laboratory and field techniques, working with specialist equipment and software for environmental analysis. Our academic staff are active researchers in areas such as conservation biology, ecosystem health, climate adaptation and environmental microbiology, ensuring your learning reflects the latest scientific developments.

Field trips, guest lectures and collaborative projects give you insight into the diverse ways biological knowledge is applied in environmental management, conservation and sustainability research.

Career paths

A degree in environmental biology from Ludlow opens up opportunities in environmental consultancy, conservation, ecology, sustainability, and research. Graduates work in organisations such as environmental agencies, charities, conservation trusts and research institutes.

Many continue into postgraduate study or specialise further in areas such as wildlife management, environmental monitoring, or ecological restoration. With a mix of scientific understanding, practical field skills and environmental awareness, you’ll be ready to contribute to protecting and managing life on Earth.
